About

Our Mission

Feed, Nourish, Thrive, this website and portal to online educational resources, is a campaign aiming to raise awareness regarding the dire need for more young people to enter careers in food and agriculture.

This campaign website and portal helps young people currently making decisions about their future explore various interesting and fulfilling careers in food and agriculture. By engaging with the site, and delving into its interactive resources, young people will learn that careers in food and agriculture can help to sustainably feed the 9 billion people that will be on the Earth by 2050. They’ll also learn that food and agriculture jobs make great careers, and pay well!

Feeding the planet is one of the greatest challenges for the future. Technology and applied sciences hold the key to solving this problem. Unfortunately, the supply of students going into the Food & Ag industry is lower than the demand. According to data gathered by the USDA and Purdue University, an average of 35,400 new U.S. graduates with expertise in food, agriculture, renewable natural resources, or the environment are expected to fill 61% of the expected 57,900 average annual openings. This means that 39% of jobs will need to be filled by students without formal preparation in the field.

We’ll need more young people to fill these critical jobs. This portal was debuted at the World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue on October 15, 2015. It was created as an ongoing project by the STEM Food & Ag Council, a project of STEMconnector. Check back often to learn more about important career choices in food and agriculture.

STEM Food & Ag Council

The STEM Food & Ag Council (SFAC) is a membership group, coordinated by STEMconnector, with the goal of engaging the next generation in STEM careers in the Food & Agricultural sector. The Council has the bold vision of developing the requisite human capital that will drive the innovation to feed 9 billion people by 2050.

Together, as fully committed leaders and professionals, the SFAC will engage America’s youth, educators and parents to inspire, nurture and engage them in their discovery and pursuit of STEM Food & Agriculture careers. The SFAC convenes the key players from industry, non-profits, higher education and government in order to maximize impact through collective action.
