Sustainable Agriculture

Kiko’s obsession with agriculture began in her freshman year when she read Michael Pollan’ The Omnivore’s Dilemma in her ethical eating class and simultaneously interned at the Student Farm. Both experiences challenged her to question where her food came from, and opened her eyes to a whole food system that she took for granted. Soon after, she joined the brand new sustainable agriculture and food systems major and dove into any food related experience she could get her hands on. She worked for three years for Dining Services’ Aggie Grown program getting campus-produced food into the dining commons. She interned at the Bee Biology Center where they taught her how to take care of honey bee colonies and help with research. She took classes where they took field trips to meet Central Valley farmers. She worked with the Student Farm and Pantry communities to bring surplus farm produce to students in need. Getting involved in all these food and agriculture microcosms at UC Davis has given her a real appreciation for all the work that is being done to help people and the environment. She believes solutions to this generation’s agriculture problems will come from synthesizing information from many different fields, so she is excited for her next step applying to Peace Corps to expand her horizons and learning about agriculture abroad.
